Cleaning coins

To this problem we unfortunately find written a lot, and we had much contradictory readed. In principle it applies however that coins as few should be cleaned as possible and never with sharp articles may become “scratched”. Note that a beautiful patina, which resulted with coins from decades is even rated worth-increasing. This does not apply however to oxidations, it attacks surfaces. The problem of the cleaning is surely also the various alloys of the coins.

The coin cleaning consists after my feeling of several steps ,

• Removing of unwanted thinks,
• removing the cleaning agent,
• and drying with following renewed keeping .

I recommend a cleaning with ultrasonoscopes and the appropriate cleaners for the various alloys. But, you have to make always own experiences with less good coins. Remind, never give different alloys together into a bath. Subsequently, the coin under flowing water must be well rinsed off.
The cleaned coin is dabbed with a soft cloth, put it on a cloth in a dry room to “air” the coin. Subsequently, I lock the coin in coinholders or coincaps. Take yourselves for cleaning much time.
To “air” the coin is very important and approx. a half day or better the whole night to should take up. I had to make the sorrowful experience, that through insufficient air a complete collection was destroyed after some years. The coins black-blue started were not to be saved no more.

I can recommend also cleaning with tooth paste, but attention, no tooth paste for radiating white teeth! Put the tooth paste quite thickly on the coin and draw in let rinse off (experience duration to test), under flowing water well, dab and for air, afterwards in holders or caps to lock.

With very old and extremely strongly gotten dirty coins, like from excavations, already a bath lasting for weeks in olive oil with following gentle and careful mechanical cleaning helped somewhat.
